Beyond Biospecimen Sourcing: How IBS Global Builds Research Partnerships
Successful biospecimen sourcing involves much more than collecting and shipping samples. It starts with strong relationships with clinical institutions.
Reliable access to human biospecimens is essential for biomedical research. Yet successful biospecimen sourcing involves much more than collecting and shipping samples. It requires strong relationships with clinical institutions, an understanding of their capabilities, and a shared commitment to scientific quality and responsible research practices.
At IBS Global, developing these relationships is the key part of how we build and strengthen our international partner network.
Engaging Clinical Institutions in Biomedical Research
On October 22, IBS GL organized an educational webinar in Chile titled “Before Clinical Trials: The Role of Human Biospecimens in Preclinical and Translational Research.”
The session featured Dr. Elmira Safarova, IBS GL Country Representative in Chile, and Dr. Alicia Colombo, Scientific Director of the Tissue and Fluid Biobank at the University of Chile.
The webinar explored the role of human biospecimens in drug discovery and translational research, the scientific value of clinical sample collections, and the opportunities for hospitals, pathology laboratories, and biobanks to contribute to international research.
Particular attention was given to the factors that determine whether biospecimens are suitable for research, including sample quality, clinical characterization, traceability, and ethical and regulatory requirements.
Why Partner Education Matters
Healthcare institutions generate and preserve biological materials as part of routine clinical practice. However, participating in international research requires additional knowledge, processes, and institutional coordination.
By engaging directly with potential partners, IBS GL aims to create a shared understanding of research needs, technical requirements, and responsible approaches to biospecimen use.
These conversations help institutions assess their potential contribution to biomedical research while enabling IBS GL to better understand local capabilities and operational considerations.
Building a Stronger Global Biospecimen Network
Our approach to partner development goes beyond individual sample requests.
We believe that sustainable biospecimen sourcing depends on long-term relationships, transparent communication, and alignment between the needs of researchers and the capabilities of clinical institutions.
Educational initiatives such as the Chile webinar are one way IBS GL supports this approach.
As we continue developing our international network, we remain focused on connecting biomedical research organizations with institutions capable of contributing high-quality, well-characterized human biospecimens through appropriate ethical and regulatory processes.
